Spacious cottage, equal parts old-time elegance and whimsy, filled with local art, books, magazines. On a one-lane road surrounded by woods, it’s a quiet retreat, with porches and decks for relaxing and recharging. Perfect for reading, writing/thinking, it’s a creative’s dream. 2.3 miles, 7 minutes from town on winding, steep mountain roads. Kick off your shoes, let down your hair, and get comfortable among the birds, bees, and woods--and all within minutes of downtown Charleston, two universities, and four hospitals. Enjoy a library of classic books and local art that bring a smile. Beds are comfy, kitchen is well equipped with gadgets and basics--oil, salt/pepper, common spices, coffee, tea, sugar, honey. All hardwood floors reduce allergens. There's a shower AND a tub--yay! Dine inside or outside on a deck. It's a c. 1900 house--relatively narrow doorways and halls, and a step up to get into the bathroom. Situated on a hillside, thus stairs to climb to reach entrances. It is not wheelchair-accessible. Guests have access to all of the residential area of Katherine's House--four decks and a porch, three bedrooms, kitchen, dining room, and living room. One deck is free of furnishings, making it great for a yoga mat or an easel. We live next door, in one of the last four circa 1900 cabins that remain of the original 40-house community that once thrived here. We're available sometimes. Sometimes we aren't. Of the five houses in the neighborhood, only two are full-time residences. The area looks rural, and many guests say they are surprised it’s so close to town. Of the five houses on the road, only two are occupied full-time; one by a family with two lively youngsters and two dogs, and one by my husband and me. The one-lane road is closed just below our houses. You can still walk or bike the bottom half. More than half of the neighborhood is an unofficial wildlife sanctuary. Lots of birds and small critters, and our own herd of deer. There's a parking pad directly across the road from Katherine's House with enough space for two or three vehicles, depending on how you park. Uber and Lyft are available. Heads up, all ye who are not accustomed to winding mountain roads: Katherine's House is less than three mostly vertical miles from downtown Charleston with all its restaurants, hospitals, colleges, and shopping. Those vertical miles mean you will be driving on narrow, winding roads. Stay on your side of the road and you'll be fine! Prepare for a winding, twisting ride up a hill, then a final swoop down the backside of the hill you just climbed. 100% survival rate so far.
